Whitesnake and the Wail

Written by  Sims Delaney-Potthoff

Here's a story that's been waiting for years to be told.  In the very early years of H Wail (hence the pic) we had a gig at the Sheraton Inn just across the hiway from the Dane County coliseum where Whitesnake was performing.  It was a happy hour gig and as we were doing our sound check, the Whitesnake dudes were having a drink at the bar - pretty easily recognized - they were the only ones with painted on leopard skin pants and big hair.  We were getting ready for a sound check when one of the Whitesnake dudes said to the other, "hmm, looks like a bluegrass band."  Now that kind of struck me that Whitesnake would know what the hell a bluegrass and looked like.  I thought, these guys must really know their shit about music.  We then  played a snippet of a tune for a sound check and stopped to adjust when the second guy said to the first,  "no, no. it's jazz on bluegrass instruments!"  They finished their martinis and strutted off to the coliseum and we then knew who we were and just what we were doing and playing -- I LOVE WHITESNAKE!
